Even if OpenAI says the voice isn’t a deliberate imitation, the model will nonetheless be eliminated.
Following several stories (including one from Saturday Night Live) highlighting the striking resemblance between the ChatGPT voice and Scarlett Johansson, OpenAI is removing the likeness. According to the corporation, the voice, known as Sky, is currently being placed on “pause.”
“Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress utilizing her own natural speaking voice,” OpenAI wrote this morning. We feel that AI voices should not intentionally mimic a celebrity’s distinctive sound.
In an interview with The Verge last week, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati refuted claims that the replication of Johansson was deliberate. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, seems to be aware of the resemblances even if Johansson’s voice wasn’t mentioned specifically because he posted the single word “her” on X following the event.
Since last year, ChatGPT’s voice mode and the Sky voice model have been available. However, the feature gained much more attention last week when OpenAI unveiled the enhancements included in its new GPT-4o model. With the help of a phone’s camera, the new model enables the voice assistant to interpret facial expressions and translate spoken words in real time, giving it more expressive capabilities.
According to OpenAI, the five ChatGPT voice profiles that are presently accessible were chosen from more than 400 casting requests submitted by voice and film performers. Citing the need to “protect their privacy,” the business declined to release the actors’ identities.
Limited “alpha” access to the enhanced ChatGPT voice assistant features will begin “in the coming weeks” for ChatGPT Plus members. To “better match the diverse interests and preferences of users,” OpenAI eventually intends to add more voices.
